Community Structure in Jazz
نویسندگان
چکیده
In the last years the physics community has devoted a strong effort to the study of social networks. The availability of large databases containing information on the collaborations between movie actors, scientists, etc. has allowed for many statistical properties of the networks to be characterized. These studies have revealed that some characteristics appear to be general for these kind of networks. In particular the average distance between any pair of vertices grows slowly, what is known as the small world property. It has also been observed that the degree distribution P(k) follows a skewed distribution. In the particular case where P(k) presents a power law tail the network is known as scale free. An interesting point which has recently raised attention is the community structure of networks. Communities appear in networks when vertices join together in tight groups that have a few connections between them. By eliminating these connections it is possible to isolate the communities. In fact this is the main idea of the algorithm that Girvan and Newman have recently proposed1.

Descriptors for perception of quality in jazz piano improvisation
Quality assessment of jazz improvisation is a multi-faceted, high-level cognitive task routinely performed by educators in university jazz programs and other discriminating music listeners. In this pilot study, we present a novel dataset of 88 MIDI jazz piano improvisations with ratings of creativity, technical proficiency, and aesthetic appeal provided by four jazz experts, and we detail the d...
متن کاملAll That Jazz : Três Aplicações Do Conceito
The theme of improvisation constitutes an emerging topic in the field of management and organizations. The concept entered organization studies in association with the jazz metaphor but, due to the growing number of empirical studies, it is acquiring an increasing level of prominence and instrumental value. This article discusses the relationship between jazz music and management studies. It st...
متن کاملA Clustering Algorithm for Recombinant Jazz Improvisations
Music, one of the most structurally analyzed forms of human creativity, provides an opportune platform for computer simulation of human artistic choice. This thesis addresses the question of how well a computer model can capture and imitate the improvisational style of a jazz soloist. How closely can improvisational style be approximated by a set of rules? Can a computer program write music tha...
متن کاملA Generative Representation for the Evolution of Jazz Solos
This paper describes a system developed to create computer based jazz improvisation solos. The generation of the improvisation material uses interactive evolution, based on a dual genetic representation: a basic melody line representation, with energy constraints (“rubber band”) and a hierarchic structure of operators that processes the various parts of this basic melody. To be able to listen t...
متن کاملPhrase-Level Audio Segmentation of Jazz Improvisations Informed by Symbolic Data
Computational music structure analysis encompasses any model attempting to organize music into qualitatively salient structural units, which can include anything in the heirarchy of large scale form, down to individual phrases and notes. While much existing audio-based segmentation work attempts to capture repetition and homogeneity cues useful at the form and thematic level, the time scales in...
متن کاملJazz Harmony : A Progress Report
How jazz syntax is theorized, and how it is filtered through various pedagogical frames for dissemination to increasingly sophisticated students, is evolving at an impressive rate. There is now a sizable body of literature on jazz theory and analysis, and at least three “generations” of card-carrying music theorists drawing upon and extending the rigorous work that has taken place since the 197...
